When I select Help > Check for updates menu, an error message "Failed to connect to internet. Please confirm the internet connection settings." appears.

At the first, please exit EDIUS then try accessing the URL below with Microsoft Edge from the EDIUS PC:
https://ediusworld.com/support/UpdateInfo/edius11ver.xml
You should be able to see below page in the Microsoft Edge:

If the browser fails to open the page, it is actually network connection issue. If the browser opens the page and shows an XML document, it is another issue that we are investigating now. Please try below items.

1. After opening the XML page above, launch EDIUS and try it again. There are cases that it fixes the issue.

2. If the above does not solve the issue, confirm if current build is the latest (details here). If older build is running, please open the EDIUS download page in your web browser to get the latest installer.
